Fifty Shades Insight in February’s 2015 Issue of Details Magazine

What an amazing article FSoG fans can look forward to reading in the February 2015 issue of Details Magazine! Much insight is revealed about the movie from producer Michael DeLuca and director, Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Oh, and in the tradition of Details Magazine…it probably includes some gorgeous pictures and behind-the-scenes video of our leading man, Jamie Dornan. ;) He describes the ups and downs to his particular process of auditioning for the role of Christian Grey.

Details2015

So the article asks if Jamie can dominate Hollywood. Fans aren’t worried about all of Hollywood — we are just looking for him to bring the character of Christian Grey to life in a way that does justice to our love for the story!

Enjoy this excerpt:

The classy and sophisticated Taylor-Johnson was drawn to this very mass-market project by the balance of power between Steele and Grey. “I’d not seen a love story as complex, or with sex as complex,” she says. “You feel you’re in his world, then slowly it’s revealed that you’re in hers. To be able to flip this tale, without the woman becoming a victim, was something I felt strongly about.”
This is Taylor-Johnson’s second feature (after 2009’s Nowhere Boy, a biopic about the young John Lennon), and by the time it opens, she will have worked on it for close to two years; the editing alone has taken more than nine months.
The biggest challenge involved the calibration of sex. “There’s so much of it!” Taylor-Johnson says with a laugh. “The difficult part has been to give each sex scene its own identity and character, so that the first is incredibly different from the last—and to try and do it in a way that feels powerful, not just salacious.” Equally concerning was the balance of nudity, which is plentiful; Taylor-Johnson was committed to making sure that both stars were naked an equal amount—without “feeling that just she is objectified or just he is.”
We’ve always felt our cherished love story was in good hands with the director — her words here are only further reassuring!

First ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Trailer Debuts At CinemaCon

Kudos to Lori Ness from NorthwestPrime for connecting the dots after seeing a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter’s Pamela McClintock (here) yesterday. The poster on a set of elevator doors at Caesars Palace turned out to be a hint of things to come.

Needless to say, Twitter was slammed with tweets from CinemaCon attendees, media outlets, Team Fifty members, FSoG bloggers, and especially FSoG fans.

THR’s Rebecca Ford and Pamela McClintock reported that Universal’s presentation was delivered by Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley. Her biggest reveal? Yep. The first footage from Fifty Shades of Grey.

“Nobody outside the studio has seen a frame of footage,” Langley said.
The clip showed leads Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) and Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey) meeting in Grey’s office (“Mr. Grey will see you now,” says the receptionist), in coffee shops and the hardware store where Anastasia works, all familiar scenes from the book.
While based on EL James’ erotic novel, the film looks to be more romantic than sexual. There was a brief glimpse of Johnson wearing a black blindfold in a red room, but most of the focus was on the couple’s courting.

“Hearts and flowers — that’s not who I am,” says Grey at one point in the clip, which also showed a brief glimpse of him pushing Anastasia up against a wall.

Kara Warner from YAHOO! Movies gave fans an in-depth glimpse into the screening…

Well hello there, Mr. Grey.

Christian Grey, that is, known to millions of book readers as the love interest du jour of E.L. James’s hit “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which Universal Pictures is bringing to the big screen next Valentine’s Day. As part of their CinemaCon panel Tuesday, the studio served up a veritable buffet of trailer and teaser goodness, including the first look at footage from “Grey.”

The nearly two-minute teaser opens with a cityscape look at Seattle, on a day with some sunshine but mostly grey skies. A soft, slow piano solo plays in the background (which sounds like an airy and eerie cover of Beyoncé’s “Haunted”) as we begin with Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) recounting her first meeting with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) to her roommate, Kate (Eloise Mumford).

“So, what was he like?” Kate asks Anastasia, which we hear in voiceover as the scene of Anastasia and Christian’s first meeting plays out.

“Mr. Grey will see you now,” says his assistant to the brunette as she walks into Christian’s very spacious, immaculate office. The initial exchanges are full of shy glances from Anastasia and fixed gazes from Christian.

“He was really smart, intense,” Anastasia says to Kate, as more of their meeting plays out on screen. He passes her a pencil with “Grey” printed on it and they touch hands briefly. “He was very courteous,” she continues, as we watch Christian help her into her jacket.

“Anastasia,” Christian says as she gets on the elevator.

“Christian,” she responds, and the elevator doors close.

Now the lyrics to the song playing in the background kick in, with a backbeat that fittingly speeds up the action and the courtship. There are passionate embraces and kisses, extended time spent together, touching. We see Anastasia falling head-over-heels in love and into Christian’s world and only realizing she might be in too deep when he slowly opens a door… into a room… (book readers will know what we mean).

“I don’t know if I can be with him the way he needs me to,” Anastasia says in voiceover as we catch a quick glimpse of her lying down, a look of surprise on her face.

The rest of the teaser is a slight back-and-forth between the romance and the potentially dangerous connection between the two lovers. You can feel the intensity building, enhanced by the very colorful landscape director Sam Taylor-Johnson has created. The footage feels lush, elegant, and clean, but with an element of restraint and danger.

And then there is the not-at-all-subtle smolder of Dornan as Christian Grey. He simmers onscreen. Johnson seems perfectly natural as the innocent ingenue about to embark on a road of discovery.

Their final exchange in the teaser is a solid one: “Why are you trying to change me?” Anastasia worriedly asks Christian.

“I’m not,” Christian says, with emotion. “It’s you that’s changing me.”

Exciting stuff, right?! The multi-million $ question now is when will the rest of the world get to see it? Would seem like it would be hard to keep it a secret for too long given the nature of social media, so we’re hoping it’s soon…like tomorrow soon ;) It would be nice if the official movie account got the hono(u)r. Dakota Johnson Discusses Fifty Shades of Grey With Vanity Fair

In this behind-the-scenes video from Dakota’s recent photo shoot for Vanities Opener (see more here), the actress tells Senior West Coast Editor Krista Smith that filming Fifty Shades of Grey has been “a very smooth and fun and creative experience.” Adding, “I think going into something like this, you kind of have all these different fears of what it could be like, and none of those things are happening. We all get along really well. The crew’s amazing, and we’re all just trying to make this project the best that it can be.”

Fifty Shades of Grey: “I’m here to see Mr. Grey.”

The chance meeting that changed everything…

Fifty Shades of Grey, Chapter One, pp. 4-5

THE ROADS ARE CLEAR as I set off from Vancouver, Washington, toward Interstate 5. It’s early, and I don’t have to be in Seattle until two this afternoon. Fortunately, Kate has lent me her sporty Mercedes CLK. I’m not sure Wanda, my old VW Beetle, would make the journey in time. Oh, the Merc is a fun drive, and the miles slip away as I hit the pedal to the metal.

My destination is the headquarters of Mr. Grey’s global enterprise. It’s a huge twenty-story office building, all curved glass and steel, an architect’s utilitarian fantasy, with GREY HOUSE written discreetly in steel over the glass front doors. It’s a quarter to two when I arrive, greatly relieved that I’m not late as I walk into the enormous – and frankly intimidating – glass, steel, and white sandstone lobby.

Fifty Shades of Grey US Premiere Date Moved to Valentine’s Day 2015

Well, we all know Christian really is a hearts and flowers kind of guy, right? ;)

Not really a big surprise, but here’s an excerpt from the exclusive EW article with a statement from Universal:

…Universal says, the casting change is not the primary reason for the new release date.

More pressing is the crowded summer schedule Fifty Shades was originally competing in. Originally set to hit screens August 1, 2014, the film, based on the sexy best-seller by E L James, was set to go up opposite Marvel’s potential new franchise Guardians of the Galaxystarring Chris Pratt and Benicio del Toro. Internationally things are even busier, with many studios pushing their big tentpoles out of next June and July — to avoid competition from the World Cup in Brazil — and into August.

“We see this movie as a global event,” Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley tells EW. “The strength of this book is really worldwide, so we want to be able to take advantage of women who are invariably on vacation with their families during the month of August in Europe.”

Now the film will debut on Valentine’s Day weekend, beginning on Friday, February 13, which also coincides with the President’s Day holiday, giving Universal the opportunity to post a big three-day number for that frame.

“Together with the international marketing and distribution team, we’ve been looking really closely at the August date and becoming more and more convinced that the right thing to do for the movie was to push it,” Langley says. “So even if Charlie had stayed, we still would have been making the date change.”

You’ll want to be sure and pick up a copy of this special issue when it hits stands on Friday, because here is what you will find inside in addition to additional photos from the photo shoot:

  • interview with author E L James
  • interview with director Sam Taylor-Johnson
  • interview with Jamie Dornan

Production notes, teaser trailer, and fanart… Oh my!

Production Notes

The movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey is in pre-production, as casting continues and locations are scouted. As previously reported by Production Weekly, the majority of filming will take place at North Shore Studios in Vancouver, Canada. However, the filming schedule has been bumped from November 5th to December 2nd. Until we hear otherwise, Team Fifty is still targeting August 1, 2014, as the U.S. release date.

Although there’s been no word yet from author E L James or someone in Team Fifty’s camp, Variety has reported (here) that Jennifer Ehle is in negotiations to play Ana’s mother, Carla. IMDb also lists the Zero Dark Thirty actress in the role here and here. As always, we’ll keep you posted on any official updates.

Teaser Trailer

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again… We love the creativity of the FSoG fandom. This fanmade teaser trailer by Fifty Shades Queen features our brand new Christian Grey, Jamie Dornan, and his Ana, Dakota Johnson.

We really enjoyed this one. The videographer did a nice job choosing clips to coordinate with the story, and the song is beautifully haunting. Speaking of which, if anyone knows the name of the song and/or artist, let us know in the comments.

And just how Fiftyesque is Jamie looking in the opening and closing shots?!

We’re looking forward to creating more graphics to celebrate the Fifty Shades Trilogy by E L James in the days, months, years (!) ahead, as well as continuing to share the creative inspiration of fellow FSoG fans. You can follow our Fifty Shades Pinterest Boards here.

We have our Anastasia Steele: Dakota Johnson

Good moaning all. Hold on to your hats…

I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Dakota Johnson

It’s not surprising that she was on Team Fifty’s radar since she had a small part in co-producers Dana Brunetti and Michael DeLuca’s Academy Award winning movie “The Social Network.”

Please join us in welcoming Dakota Johnson to the cast. We look forward to learning more about the girl who will win Christian’s hearts in the days/months/years ahead!
